Lefsetz makes a good point in this article: the industry is about getting people to pay attention. Lefsetz states, "Used to be you get started. And then you had your moment. Now, you're lucky if you can even start. And that might be the biggest moment you ever get". With the amount of talent out there accessible to the public now, it IS hard to get people to pay attention. And once they are listening, it's hard not to choke. Nothing impresses anyone anymore. In that way, we are Shakespearean groundlings, drooling at the edge of the stage... the difference is, we turn away if we aren't entertained. The only fault I can find in this article is that Lefsetz generalizes by making it seem as if all of those writing music today are working for that payoff... however, I've encountered a few musicians, and like to count myself as one of them, who write simply for the love of music.
